I often regret how there never was a picture of me when I was in high school. I know! You must be thinking, “What the?!? Is she kidding?” I never believed I was photogenic, but along with that belief, I never imagined how much I’ve missed…sort of. I never had something to hold on to when I was in the mood to reminisce.
Just recently, I’ve been interested in photography and film…well…maybe not photography. It’s too big a word…maybe I just like taking pictures. I like chasing moments. I didn’t have to be the one in the picture. It felt good having no option but to point and click just to bottle-up a moment in pixels.
Before graduating, we were fortunate to have an amazing editor. The first time we met him, he was holding his Panasonic DVX100B like his life depended on it. He ate with it; he walked with it; probably he even slept with it; I wouldn’t know. I figured…that’s the kind of relationship I wanted to have with my camera, no matter how meager. He was doing what he wanted, and he used his passion to feed himself and pay the rent. He edited short films, shot birthdays and weddings, and eventually finally landed a directorial job at a local station.
I also remember attending a seminar that included photojournalism, and when the speaker was asked how one could possibly be good at capturing moments. His answer was simple; learn how to capture moments. He and his fellow photojournalists used to have a hotline for events like weddings, birthdays, baptisms, almost anything they could get some extra income as photographers. Being there, he said, even if you’d only have to crash…just come dressed, point, and shoot, which were all it took. They were there to capture moments.
Looking back, I realize it makes sense. A lot of people pay loads to get moments captured. If, say, a friend had an event but has a tight budget, all it takes is guts to step up and offer some help…and maybe slip in a (sort of half-meant) joke about getting paid. If I wanted though…I wouldn’t know where to start…
…and then I found this guide on the Internet. The title was pretty straightforward: Starting a photography Business by Roy Barker. The content does not disappoint too. It teaches me how to build a photography business from scratch. It covers topics from a brief history of photography, to the equipment I should have. It tells me how I could market myself as a photographer, and it also discusses the legal aspect of starting a photography business. I haven’t read all, but so far, I’m already getting ideas in just a few chapters.
I’ve always wanted to start a production company...maybe I should start offering my services at home first. Who knows, I might be asking one of my cousins for a nifty price on her wedding. :D
